BEHIND THE ART: SNOWBOARDS AND THE ARTIST BEHIND THEM
[Behind The Art] is a series that evo created to explore the products we love and the artists behind them.

By: Stewart Langner, Seattle, WA: It’s always great to look down at your board (that you probably got from evo, right?) while shredding and get stoked out on some great art.  Here is the breakdown on some of the raddest snowboard artists in the game and their latest works for the 2014 season. This is our first edition of Behind The Art, the Artist Behind the Snowboard.

Electric Coffin

Electric Coffin

Seattle based, Electric Coffin is taking a new approach to design and art.  Their slogan “Built from Death” adopts the idea of bringing salvaged materials back to life in a newly imagined form. Electric Coffin has worked with a variety of Seattle based shred companies, including evo (they helped design evo Seattle), and Spacecraft to bring us a fresh take on life.

For winter 2014, they teamed up with K2 Snowboards for the graphics on the Turbo Dream. With a collage of patterns and prints, Electric Coffin brings to life the classic American spirit of adventure. Using layer upon layer of mixed media, Electric Coffin opts to do most of their creative by hand giving their work a very human feel.

Bryan Iguchi

Bryan Iguchi

Bryan Iguchi is a snowboarding legend, plain and simple. Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, Iguchi revolutionized park riding and helped Bear Mountain become one of the first mountains to have a snowboard park. However, in 1991 he moved up to Jackson Hole, WY in search of some soul shred. Finding peace in Jackson allowed Iguchi to focus on his love for both nature and art.

Using natural wood canvases, Iguchi channels his art through the hydrological cycle. His simple landscapes show the naturalistic journey of water through mountain ecosystems, and give us a deeper appreciation for mountain culture. His works are featured on the Jones Mountain Twin and Twin Sister.

Adam Haynes

adam haynes

Pacific Northwest local, Adam Haynes has a very unique style. Haynes takes dreamy pillow lines and far-out mountain peaks transforming them into fantasy-like worlds through his unique layering style. After years of working for Adidas in Portland, OR, Haynes moved into the shadow of Mt Bachelor, Bend, OR.

With the vast nature in his backyard, Adam Haynes’ imagination draws from the misty PNW landscapes. Over the years, he has worked with companies from Nike to Deschutes Brewing to create illustrations that display his creative energy. This year Adam’s work is featured on a couple of GNU snowboards, the Billy Goat and the B-Pro. Check out more of Adam Haynes’s art at sickfort.com.

Jamie Lynn

                         jamie lynn

Washington native Jamie Lynn grew up a punk rocker but soon found his place as a PNW snowboard legend. Signed by Lib Tech back in the day, Jamie took the snowboard scene by storm. With a revolutionary skate style, Lynn earned his first pro-model snowboard from Lib Tech. He was the first ever to have his personal artwork featured on his pro-model.

Lynn’s art features bold, smooth lines and cool, dark colors that eerily reflect his riding style. Famous for his blue nudes, sly cats, and smooth mountain landscapes, his art knows no boundaries. This winter is Jamie’s 20th season as a pro for Lib Tech, and his art is still featured throughout the lineup. Jamie’s art is showcased on the Lib Tech Brando by Lando and the Jamie Lynn Phoenix Series.

Corey Smith

Corey Smith

No one really knows what goes on in the creative mind of Corey Smith. His art reflects a post-Pop approach that brings day-glo focus to a dark vision. Smith’s style ranges from Death Valley realism to Californian optimism with a morbid premonition. As a former CAPiTA pro, Smith now creates the graphics for the CAPiTA Defenders of Awesome FK.

Featuring bikini clad ladies wielding machine guns, the DOA is a classic example of Corey Smith’s Death Valley realism.  Currently Smith is living in Tahoe and building handmade contemporary snowboards for his brand, Spring Break Snowboards.

Mark Kowalchuk

Mark Kowalchuk

Mark Kowalchuk is a Calgary based artist that has a unique style to his illustrations. After creating some art for YES. rider and hip hop artist, Trouble Andrew, Kowalchuk met backcountry legend and founder of YES. Snowboards, David Carrier Porcheron. Impressed by Mark’s work, DCP commissioned him to do the graphics for the YES. Pick Your Line. Drawing inspiration from old school skate artist M.C. Eschers, Kowalchuk’s illustrations feature an aggressive and angsty vibe, contrasting the artist’s relaxed and laid back personality.

The graphics for the PYL incorporate DCP’s love for surfing, representing his extreme riding style. With faces on the topsheet and a hammerhead shark on the base, the graphics offer an abstract showing of DCP’s inner beast. Check out Mark’s art at markkowalchuk.com.

Mike Parillo

Mike Parillo

Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, Mike Parillo was an extremely talented snowboarder. From living in a tent at Bear Mountain, to shredding epic pow in Jackson Hole, Parillo slayed the snowboarding scene. Even though he was an admired rider, his love for painting brought him back to LA in 1998, where he lived with fellow aspiring artists.

With no formal training, Parillo chose a path of trial by fire and self-education in painting technique. After years of refining his skills between LA and Prague, Parillo returned to Jackson, Wyoming to find a balance between his love for both art and snowboarding. Popular among the snowboard community, his psychedelic surrealism has been featured on countless snowboards throughout the years. For this season, Mike Parillo’s art is featured on the 2014 Lib Tech Attack Banana.
